A pair of engineers opened the Randolph Engineering factory in Massachusetts in 1973 with the goal of building and marketing machinery to produce eyewear; they used an advanced solder machine to complete a patented 200-step process to produce rugged frames. The frames’ high quality and near-indestructible construction earned attention from the U.S. Military. In 1978, Randolph Engineering was contracted by the U.S. Military to produce sunglasses frames that met rigorous MIL-SPEC standards; its eyewear has been standard issue for the armed forces since then. This meticulously designed eyewear became available to the public for the first time in 2008. Randolph Engineering remains a family-owned and -operated brand.
